For Paul Park, being a REALTOR® is about much more than transactions, it’s about community, leadership, and giving back.

Since 2024, Paul has served as a city council member in North Liberty, Iowa, and his journey into public service was inspired by a simple belief: give back to the community that has given so much to you.

“I love my community and have always looked for ways to give back, because it has given so much to me,” he says. “Public service is an amazing opportunity to give back and help firsthand to guide the communities we love towards a positive future. I’m inspired by those that have served before me, and it’s an honor and I believe my duty to step up and serve in this way.”

For Paul, the skills and perspective he gained as a REALTOR® made the transition into local government natural.

Volunteer service on REALTOR® committees and boards offered him leadership experience, insight into organizational operations, and an understanding of how to balance diverse stakeholder interests, all of which are essential in city government.

"Most REALTORS® are already heavily involved in their communities," he explains. "Whether it’s serving on nonprofit boards, school activities, or planning and zoning commissions, REALTORS® are wired to make a difference. Serving in elected office is just another valuable and important way to give back."

Already in his short time on the council, Paul says he’s enjoyed the work and perspective it gives him.

“I enjoy having a front row seat to everything happening in my community and the opportunity to influence policy decisions. It is particularly fun when it pertains to real estate issues,” he says.

He notes that well-intentioned ordinances or programs can have unintended consequences on housing markets, affordability, and property rights. At the same time, programs that incentivize housing supply and property improvements can be a valuable resource for both REALTORS® and their clients.

"Knowledge of these programs and grants available is a valuable resource you can be providing to your clients," Paul says. "Being a REALTOR® is about more than just helping people buy and sell property. Under all is the land, and we have a greater calling to protect that land, our rights to it, and everything built on it. Real estate is the foundation of our society, economic growth, our survival, and it is up to us to protect it. If we don’t do it, who will?”

For REALTORS® considering public service, Paul offers an enthusiastic challenge:

“Do it! I believe  REALTORS® are perfectly equipped with the qualities needed to serve in government,” Paul says. “REALTORS® have great hearts, intelligence, ethics, emotional temperament, mental fortitude, work ethic and a genuine desire to help people that are needed for public service. The communities you work in, live in and play in need more good people to be involved for the right reasons. We need people just like you!”

Through his work as both a REALTOR® and a city council member, Paul demonstrates how REALTORS® can shape the communities they serve, not just through buying and selling property, but through leadership, advocacy, and dedication.
